Previz, short for previsualization, is a relatively new technique that's slowly replacing traditional storyboarding. It uses relatively low-detailed 3D models of locations, actors and other subjects and is used to see camera movements before shooting even a single frame.

That way, directors, cinematographers and other production staff members can clearly see, study and, if needed, modify planned shots. This technique greatly helps planning and prevents a lot of problems that could slow down the production.
